The Grand Canyon – One of the World’s Natural Wonders
The Grand Canyon is one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire world. Stretching for 277 miles through the Arizona desert, this natural phenomenon is up to 18 miles wide and more than a mile deep. Located in the Colorado River Basin, the Grand Canyon has been carved out over some 17 million years, according to scientists.
The Grand Canyon area has been occupied by humans for more than 10,000 years. Native Americans have lived there for at least the last 4,000 years. It wasn’t until September of 1540 that Europeans arrived at the Grand Canyon area. Under the orders of Spanish conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado, a group of about 13 soldiers found the Canyon during a mission to find the fabled Seven Cities of Gold.
This fall – when the NFL schedule permits, of course – I plan on making a visit to the Grand Canyon. I am particularly intrigued by the Grand Canyon skywalk, a transparent, horseshoe-shaped walkway that extends over the ledge of a side canyon. The elevation of the skywalk is listed as 4,700 feet. While I’m not the biggest fan of heights, there’s no way I could pass up a chance to get this kind of view of one the world’s most famous natural wonders.
